Umkumbe Safari Lodge is one of the most affordable lodges located in the heart of the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger. The reserve is about 65000 hectares and shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park.

Accommodation is growing and will soon sleep 20 people at capacity. Rooms have two single beds, ensuite bathrooms and private patios, while each is fitted with an air-conditioner. Some of the chalets are connected via an inter-leading door, making them ideal for small groups and families. During the heat of summer, guests can relax around the swimming pool, which overlooks the Sand River and the open wilderness.

Dining in a traditional boma around a roaring fire is one of the most enjoyable African bush experiences. After dinner, rangers may even take guests out on a night drive to view the nocturnally active wildlife.

Umkumbe is in a prime position and there is almost always game to be seen from the deck and the main guest areas. Elephants, buffalo, antelope, baboons are regular visitors, while a pair of breeding fish eagles nests just in front of the lodge.

Activities

One of the main aims of going on safari is to go on a game drive. On game drives, you are able to get a lot closer to the big Five. The animals are generally habituated to the vehicle.

This means that they are used to the vehicle approaching them and know that it never causes them harm. This enables you to get within five to 10 metres of the large animals – and safely! All game drives are conducted in open 4 x 4 Landrovers. No roof allows you 360-degree views, perfect for wonderful photographic and video opportunities.

Two game drives are offered per day. On the morning drive there is a stop for coffee and on the afternoon drive, you will stop for sundowners. After sundowners guests will get to experience a night drive. The night drives allow guests the opportunity to see the nocturnal animals not encountered during the day. During the night drives, your tracker uses a powerful spotlight to search for nocturnal animals. You can see a wide variety of animals not normally seen during the day, including leopards, hyenas, serval, porcupines, bush babies, genet cats and nocturnal birds like owls and nightjars.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

“Great Sightings, Nice Facility and Friendly Staff”

My son and I visited Umkumbe in late June and we had a wonderful experience. Great sightings. We saw Elephant, Leopard, Giraffe, Rhino, African Buffalo and lots more. Our guides Bradley and Moses were wonderful, very friendly and very interactive. Facilities were very nice as was the food. We visited two Safari lodges during our stay in S.Africa and thankfully we had a two-day stay at Umkumbe first because it was by far the better of the two lodges. Loved the view of the Sabi Sands from the pool area, very mystical in the morning. Nice lodge in a nice setting with very friendly people. Made for a great Africa adventure. We really enjoyed our time at Umkumbe and hope someday to be able to return.

“Brilliant leopard sightings”

Been bringing clients to Umkumbe for many years now and they never fail to deliver on their service standards. You can never guarantee the wildlife sightings because this is not a zoo but the guides here go the extra mile to try and make it memorable. The recent leopard sightings were astounding – it took serious skill to find them in thick cover. Management never takes you for granted and they make you feel like the most valued person they’ve ever had, even if you are a regular.

“Absolutely incredible place”

This really is a small piece of paradise. I only managed to stay for one night which got me on a night game drive and a dawn game drive. I have to say however that I saw almost all you can in that time. The lodge is perfect, great staff, good food and a location to die for. I will return for three nights which would be my recommendation.

“Great Place!!”

We stayed ate Umkumbe last week for 2 days and it was a great experience.
We stayed in the Buffalo room, as it was a very rustic, comfortable room.
The best part of it was our guide Marius; he was very anxious and did his best all the time so we could see all the animals; it was clear that he loved his job!! I think 2 days are enough. Great place!
