Mala Mala Game Reserve Archives

Here are a few more animals from our S. African Photo Safari in the Mala Mala Game Reserve. We had been observing this bull elephant browsing the few remaining lower leaves on this tree when he suddenly put up his foot and knocked down the entire tree in a matter of seconds. Our guide said his broken tusk was most likely a result of knocking down other trees in the past.

This female giraffe and baby were peeking at us over the bushes.  Do you see the birds on the back of the female?  These are birds that remove ticks from the coats of many of the different animals we observed.  Nature taking care of nature.

Notice the tick removing birds on this Southern White Rhino, which unlike its cousin the Northern White Rhino, is not yet close to extinction.  However, our guides told us that poachers are killing 2-3 of these magnificent animals a day because of the black-market demand for their horns. We encountered one of the heavily armed anti-poacher vehicles that patrol the reserve 24/7 to try to stem the loss of these animals.

  • The only surviving cub after a leopard attack that killed two siblings.
  • Elephants roll in the mud to apply natural sunscreen and insect repellent

This lion cub was practicing his stalking skills as he tracked an insect.  Love those cute little tufted ears! What a pleasure it was to get to get so close to these animals and watch them as they navigate their lives in the African Bush Country.

This elephant calf was traveling along the riverbed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve in South Africa with its family.  It was caked with dry mud.  Did you know elephants roll in the mud to protect their skin from sunburn and insect bites? Plus, I think the little ones are just having fun as well!

This elephant herd was passing through the river bed This giraffe was galloping through the African Bush

Another exciting thing about our visit to the Mala Mala Game Reserve in S. Africa was the number of times we encountered elephant herds.  Each herd had several babies that the other elephants watched over. They were constantly on the move, only browsing in an area for a short while before moving on.

On another of our excursions we saw this giant giraffe galloping soundlessly through the brush.  Our guide said most likely it was not running from a predator, because the big cats rarely feed on them because of the risk of being kicked by those powerful legs. So, was it running for fun, exercise, or chasing another giraffe that we just did not see?
